Before these systems were required, fuel tanks on vehicles were just allowed to vent raw fuel vapor into the atmosphere, which aggravated the smog problem. In the 70s, all filling stations in California—and then most in the rest of the country—were required to have those clumsy rubber boots added to the filling station pump handles. Those boots and the vapor control systems on all vehicles drastically reduced the raw gasoline that would usually just evaporate into the air.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStarting in 2008 in California (and undoubtedly coming soon to other states as well), a new law now requires that the fuel tank vapor control system pass a pressure test as part of the regular smog test. This kit contains all the parts needed to re-seal the part of the vapor control system on the fuel tank of your Vanagon. There are other parts of the system that may need service, like the vapor tanks, check valves, control valve, and charcoal canister—all of which GoWesty is familiar with and keeps in stock. But our experience is that the parts in this kit are all that is needed 90% of the time. Get ahead of the game! Be prepared!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo learn more, please read our detailed article on the problem in the GoWesty Library \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/gowesty.myshopify.com\/blogs\/article-library\/fuel-tank-leaks-on-vanagons-explained\"\u003elocated here\u003c\/a\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"text-justify\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGoWesty does not include the grommets or vapor control float valves at the top of the vapor tanks for the following reasons:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"text-justify\"\u003e1) These are located at the\u003cem\u003e top\u003c\/em\u003e of the vapor tanks and are not subject to coming in contact with liquid fuel, just fuel\u003cem\u003e vapor\u003c\/em\u003e, therefore it really has nothing to do with the common 2WD fuel leaking issue for which this kit is designed to address.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"text-justify\"\u003e2) The vent valve is made from a material that gets very brittle over time, making it almost impossible to remove either the hose from it, or it from the grommet and vapor tank without destroying the valve, so it is better left alone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"text-justify\"\u003e3) In order to get to these items, one has to remove the vapor tanks—which is an entirely separate job from re-sealing the fuel tank, and can be done at any time as a separate project, if\/as needed so there is no duplication of effort.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"text-justify\"\u003e4) The two hoses that connect at the \u003cem\u003ebottom \u003c\/em\u003eof the vapor tanks \u003cem\u003eare \u003c\/em\u003esubject to liquid fuel, and should be replaced, these \u003cem\u003eare \u003c\/em\u003eincluded in our kit as is everything else that is typically needed to fix the fuel leak issue in a 2WD Vanagon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"text-justify\"\u003e5) These two hoses can be replaced without removing the tanks. You might need to shave the ramps down a bit (a razor blade works well) to prevent the tank from digging in and gouging the ramps (see photo above). During installation, if you find that the sender stops rotating smoothly into place, stop and remove it. Inspect the ramps and trim away any areas where the plastic is gouged. Additionally, we strongly recommend lubing the O-ring with white lithium grease. On top of that, you start replacing a bunch of other more expensive stuff trying to fix the problem.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: justify;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #000000;\"\u003eBelieve us, this more expensive, direct-fit, non-splice oxygen sensor is cheaper than what a less expensive, splice-in unit will cost you down the road.
