First we drove the van at a steady 55 mph on a flat highway. Then we drove twice up an average 6% grade for 3 miles (the steepest continuous grade we have in the area). We measured the transmission fluid temperatures and ambient air temperatures as you can see in the table above. Ideally, you want your transmission fluid temperature to be around 200 F. Above 225 F the fluid starts to degrade and transmission damage isn't far behind.
