Before these systems were required, fuel tanks on vehicles were just allowed to vent raw fuel vapor into the atmosphere, which aggravated the smog problem. In the 70s, all filling stations in California—and then most in the rest of the country—were required to have those clumsy rubber boots added to the filling station pump handles. Those boots and the vapor control systems on all vehicles drastically reduced the raw gasoline that would usually just evaporate into the air.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStarting in 2008 in California (and undoubtedly coming soon to other states as well), a new law now requires that the fuel tank vapor control system pass a pressure test as part of the regular smog test. This kit contains all the parts needed to re-seal the part of the vapor control system on the fuel tank of your Vanagon. There are other parts of the system that may need service, like the vapor tanks, check valves, control valve, and charcoal canister—all of which GoWesty is familiar with and keeps in stock. To achieve high articulation and far greater strength, the joints will not be as quiet as your original CV joints. So, please note that they can make some clicking and rattling sounds reminiscent of a bad standard-size joint that is about to fail. The 930s may click at full wheel droop when CV angle is greatest, especially when the CV joints are brand new and tight. The difference is that the noise is normal and it is not indicative of a joint about to fail! If you experience any unnerving noises upon installation (especially in conjunction with new coil springs) and are certain that you have assembled the axles correctly, do not panic, put some miles on them and they will quiet down once everything settles in.\u003c\/em\u003e \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eNOTE: \u003c\/strong\u003eWe do not include grease with this kit. The transmission side CV joint needs both an inner and an outer circlip. However, they also moved the muffler up only about an inch on the 4WD, even though the engine sits 2\" lower relative to the body (compared to a 2WD). GoWesty 4WD saddles move the muffler up an entire 2\" compared to the 2WD saddles—the same amount that the engine in a Syncro sits lower—so the muffler ends up in the same exact place on both 2WD and 4WD. For best fit of the J-pipe in both applications, apply a downward (2WD) or upward (4WD) force on the outlet of the collector WHILE tightening the four bolts to the front and rear exhaust pipes. This will adjust the angle of the three-bolt flange (where the J-pipe bolts on) slightly up or down. A small angle change at that flange makes a BIG displacement change at the catalytic converter end of the J-pipe, which is about 18\" away.
