Shift rod bushing and boot set. Crafted from superior Teflon & Viton Rubber. These bushings and boots are designed for smooth shifting, zero maintenance, and superior protection from the elements. This system is the preferred choice for vans that see frequent off-road use. If you typically spend lots of time driving in dusty and muddy environments, these boots will keep your bushings free from dust and dirt accumulation for trouble-free shifting.
Fits: All 1983-91 manual transaxle watercooled Vanagon models including many diesel models. Does not fit aircooled Vanagons.
Bundle includes:
(2) Teflon Shift Shaft Bushings
(4) Viton Shift Shaft Boots
*Installation tip: Our Teflon bushings (and Viton boots) are designed to operate completely dry. No lube of any kind is used on the bushing or the shafts—nothing for dirt and grime to stick to. Zero regular maintenance is required. To install, just clean off all the old built-up lubricants and road grime, slip these bushings into place, and forget about sticky shifting. These are truly the last set of shifter bushings you will have to install in your Vanagon!
Installers Note: This hard bushing system is vastly superior in terms of shifting, durability and maintenance. However, they do not dampen engine vibration (noise) between the shift shafts and body as well. This is not a problem with a flat-four engine (VW Waterboxer or Subaru) because they are so smooth. Not recommended for inline engine conversions, especially diesel.
What is Viton you ask?
Well, Viton is a fluorocarbon-based fluoroelastomer. Cool! It is considered one of the best synthetic rubber materials available. It is known for its ability to withstand extreme temperatures and fluid resistance, making it the ideal material for harsh environments. It is often used in the aerospace and automotive industries where exposure to high temperatures, fuel, oil, and other chemicals is common. It is tough and durable, with great abrasion and tear resistance. It is famous for its fluid resistance, and ability to withstand exposure to aggressive fuels, oils, acids, gasses, hydrocarbons, and other chemicals. Viton also has a strong resistance to UV exposure, oxidation, ozone, weathering, and molds. So yeah, it is really good stuff!
At GoWesty, we know materials matter. Do you ever wonder why OEM polymer parts seem to last many years, but often the replacement part will break down in a matter of months? That is because manufacturers had to support every part of their vehicles for at least ten years or suffer the consequences of customer dissatisfaction and ultimately loss of sales. The devil is in the details when it comes to polymers—not all are created equal! You can have two identical-looking parts in your hand and one of them might be completely crap. If you have a Mean Green GoWesty part in your hand you can rest assured it is made of the very best, no-holds-barred material for the application.
Whether it is FMK or HBNR, we make them green so you can tell it is a genuine, properly engineered, maximum durability part only available from GoWesty!
