This GoWesty Cruise Control Kit is designed specifically for the Vanagon application.
Fits: Any year and model Vanagon with any engine.*
The control unit mounts under the dash behind the glove box. The throttle pull cable runs through the grommets where the heater control cable passes, just forward of the shift lever, and pulls directly on the accelerator pedal linkage. The cruise gets a speed reading via our own GoWesty-made (in the USA, of course) vehicle speed sensor (VSS), which mounts to the back of the speedometer where VW fitted their NLA (no longer available) speed sensor on Vanagons that were equipped with cruise control from the factory. Essentially, our kit mounts entirely in the front of the vehicle. There is no need for any magnets* or splicing into the speedometer cable or getting into the engine compartment at all. We crafted our cruise control wiring harness to eliminate the need to splice into any factory wiring.
And, of course, our kit will also work with the factory VW Vanagon cruise control switch located in the turn signal switch—if you have that factory switch, you can use it with our system.
Please specify which transmission type you have (manual/automatic) and if you'd like a control switch.
*If your speedometer has a screw-on speedometer cable, or a GoWesty Electronic GPS Speedometer, you will need to purchase our axle-mounted VSS system (part number GW-CV-VSS) to run cruise control.
Important product note & disclaimer: This cruise control system is the most technologically advanced product available for a Vanagon. It is designed to reduce driver fatigue over long stretches of primarily flat highway. It is not wise to use cruise control in heavy traffic, in highly populated areas, or on winding and hilly roads. It should also be known that this system does not have the ability to upshift or downshift your vehicle, nor can it be expected to maintain your chosen vehicle speed at all times, over all terrains. Given the fact that Vanagons are relatively underpowered, and feature non electronically-controlled transaxles, there will be occasions where an incline is encountered that is simply too steep for this cruise control system to maintain speed, and it will auto-disengage.This feature is designed to protect you and your vehicle, and is an indication that the system is functioning properly. Not recommended for use under 45MPH.
