Brakes: Please note that if you have our first generation of bigger brakes these steel wheels will not fit on your vehicle. The first generation can be distinguished by a lack of logo, every generation after that has a logo and fits great with these 15” steel wheels.
Tires: These 15X7 wheels are 1.5” wider than the original steel wheels on your van. Here are some things to consider regarding tire choices:
1971-79 Bus: 215/65R15 tires will barely fit on the rear of later 1973-79 models that have slightly more flared fender arches than the 1971-72 models and sometimes need the fender flares to be “rolled” for sufficient clearance. If you have a 1971-72 model, or a 1973-79 model and want to play it safe: we recommend a slightly narrower 205/70R15—it is about the same diameter but about ½" narrower:
Vanagon-Street/not lifted 2WD and 4WD: We recommend tire size 215/65R15.
Vanagon 2WD off-road/lifted and 4WD: We recommend a tire size no larger than 215/75R15.
Syncro off-road: As with many wheel options, fitting a tire larger than 215/75R15 is possible but may require lifting springs, lengthened trailing arms, wheel spacers, and/or body modifications.
Please Note: If you have drum brakes in the rear of your van you must remove the set bolts before installing these wheels as the bolt head will interfere with the wheel center.
