Will this seal fit my 1985 Vanagon with a manual transmission?

Yes, this seal is specifically designed to fit 2WD and 4WD water-cooled Vanagon transaxles from 1983 through 1991, including your 1985 model. It ensures proper sealing on the gear selector shaft for those years.

How do I know which side of the seal to install facing out?

The seal has a spring side which should always face outward during installation. This positioning is crucial for creating an effective seal around the gear selector shaft and preventing leaks.

Is this an OEM part or aftermarket? How reliable is it?

This is a high-quality aftermarket seal from a trusted brand known for durability and precise fit. It meets or exceeds OEM standards, ensuring a reliable seal and long-lasting performance for your Vanagon.

Can I install this seal myself, or do I need a mechanic?

If you have basic mechanical skills and tools, you can install this seal yourself by carefully removing the old seal and placing the new one with the spring side outward. However, if you're not confident, a professional mechanic can ensure it's installed perfectly without damage.

Will replacing this seal help with gear shift issues or oil leaks?

Yes, a worn or damaged gear selector shaft seal can cause oil leaks and may affect gear shifting performance. Installing this seal helps prevent leaks around the selector shaft and can improve gear selector operation by maintaining proper lubrication and sealing.
