Will this Horn Contact Ring fit my Vanagon, and which option should I choose?

This Horn Contact Ring is designed to fit all Volkswagen Vanagon models from 1980-1991, covering 2WD, 4WD (Syncro), and both manual and automatic transmissions. We offer three options: the genuine OE (original equipment), a quality aftermarket (AM), and GoWesty’s custom version. The OE option is ideal if you want the exact fit and finish as your original. The AM is a great budget-friendly replacement, and GoWesty’s version is engineered specifically to solve common Vanagon horn issues with improved durability. If you’re dealing with recurring horn contact problems, the GoWesty option is a popular choice among Vanagon owners.

Is it difficult to install the Horn Contact Ring myself?

Replacing your Vanagon’s horn contact ring is a straightforward DIY project for most owners with basic hand tools. The installation involves removing the steering wheel, swapping out the old horn ring for the new one, and reassembling—no special skills or tools required. We recommend consulting your Vanagon’s manual for steering wheel removal instructions, and always disconnect the battery for safety before beginning. Taking your time and double-checking connections will help restore your horn’s reliable operation.

What are the main differences between the OE, Aftermarket, and GoWesty horn ring options?

Great question! The OE (Original Equipment) horn contact ring is identical to what came with your Vanagon from the factory, ensuring a perfect fit and finish. The Aftermarket (AM) version is an affordable alternative that meets stock specifications, making it a solid replacement choice. GoWesty’s custom horn contact ring is enhanced for better reliability and longevity, addressing some of the common weaknesses found in the original designs. If you want an upgrade that solves persistent horn failure, go with the GoWesty version; for faithful restoration, choose OE; and for value, the AM is your best bet.
