My 1985 Vanagon manual transaxle is leaking a bit, is this the right input shaft seal I need to fix it?

Yes, this input shaft seal is specifically designed for all 1968-1991 VW Bus and Vanagon manual transaxles, including Syncros. If you're experiencing a leak around the input shaft of your manual transmission, this seal is very likely the component you need. It's a common wear item that can degrade over time.

I'm rebuilding my transaxle. Does this input shaft seal come with other seals, or do I need to buy them separately?

This listing is for the input shaft seal specifically. While it is a crucial part used in the Differential Housing Reseal Kit, this particular product is just the seal itself. If you're doing a full transaxle reseal, you may want to check out the complete kit, but this individual seal is perfect if only the input shaft seal needs replacement.

What's the difference between this seal and one for an automatic transmission?

This is the correct input shaft seal specifically for manual transaxles in your Bus or Vanagon. Automatic transmissions use different seals due to their internal design and operating pressures. Using the manual transaxle specific seal ensures proper fitment and function for your manual gearbox.

How hard is it to replace this input shaft seal on my Vanagon?

Replacing the input shaft seal typically requires removing the driveshaft and possibly some other components to gain access. It's a job that can be done by a confident DIYer, but often requires specific tools and a good manual for your Vanagon. If you're not comfortable with transmission work, we recommend having a qualified mechanic perform the seal replacement.
