Will this plastic thermostat housing fit my late model Vanagon 2WD?

Yes, this thermostat housing is specifically designed for 1986-1991 Vanagon 2WD models. It's made from durable plastic and comes with the necessary o-ring for a proper seal. Just make sure your Vanagon is a 2WD and not a Syncro or Diesel, as this part won't fit those.

I have a Vanagon Syncro or Diesel. What thermostat housing should I get?

This particular thermostat housing is for 2WD gasoline Vanagons (1986-1991) only. If you have a Vanagon Syncro or a Diesel model, you'll need a different part. We offer specific options for those harder-to-find applications; please check our other listings or contact us for the correct part number.

Does this housing come with the seal or O-ring?

Great question! Yes, this thermostat housing includes the essential o-ring needed for installation. This ensures you have all the main components for a secure and leak-free fit when you replace your old housing.

Is this a common failure point? Should I replace it proactively on my 2WD Vanagon?

The thermostat housing on Vanagons can sometimes become brittle or crack over time, especially with age. If it's leaking or you're doing other cooling system work like replacing the thermostat or hoses on your 1986-1991 2WD Vanagon, it's often a good idea to replace the thermostat housing proactively to avoid future issues. This plastic version is a direct replacement.
