The Go Westy Sliding Door Curtain is an improvement over the original curtain screen. There is more screen in this new version. It is larger to allow more fastening options. I purchased on for our 1984 Westy and the ample screen let me cover the complete enclosure. The new curtain instructions suggests 17 snap attachment points. I utilized the existing original snap bases. And I added more snap buttons to seal the opening. The screen curtain is functional even with the zipper open—so we leave the screen curtain on for the summer. It works great and very pleased with it. There could be more snaps.
There are just enough snaps that come with the curtain kit. The snaps come with screws already in the snap bases. Convenient, but the screws cannot be removed without drilling them out. The screws are okay for most of the installation, but one might want more screw length to go through the particleboard wood base and fibreboard ceiling panels into the thinner sidewall/ roof metal. The screws are not strong enough in the heavy metal or the screw hole needed to be a fraction larger. The screws can break trying to to handle the heavier metal of the van’s lower areas.
I utilized the curtain snap assembly method that came with this kit. It is supplied with a male punch post and female receiving die to precisely align everything correctly. Align the button snap assembly at the precise curtain location—the button head, the curtain, and the female button snap part on the reverse side of the curtain. Once everything is precisely aligned, one then taps the post vertically down with a hammer. This almost always worked very well. Yay!
Regarding the screen curtain installation—I positioned the curtain with masking tape. I marked the button snap and screw locations. And then took the curtain down and put in the button snap in the curtain and screwed the base into the van’s walls. It was slow going taking the curtain up, down, checking and rechecking—but the snaps went onto the curtain with the post punch and die provided.
In my opinion, I cannot recommend the ‘recommended’ snap and plier kit. Read my review there.
