In April, 2016, Peter and Shruthi left their home in Nashville for what they thought would be a year on the road exploring North America, only to find that one year and one continent were not nearly enough. Eager for more, they set their sights on a South American adventure which has led them through vast deserts, wild rainforests, and mountain passes so high that both they and the van were gasping for air. After over two years living in their 1987 Westfalia, Peter and Shruthi can feel at home just about anywhere - language barriers and all. As they continue to explore one thing is very clear: life is short, so get out there and make it worthwhile!
Vehicle: The Blitzkrieg (Blitz, for short)
She's a 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon GL Westfalia and, despite her namesake, is anything but swift and fierce. The Blitz became part of the family in 2006 when Peter bought her as a way to make the long distance trips to visit Shruthi in Chicago not so miserable. Allowing frequent visits and the ability to stealth camp wherever, the van helped keep their long distance relationship alive during a hard time. Since then the Blitz has been Peter's daily driver and the source of a lot of blood, sweat, and tears as Peter went from not knowing what an alternator is to being able to rebuild the transmission. Now the van has been a home for over 2 years and although it feels kind of silly to say it, it really has become an inseparable part of the family.
