You might think, "Wait a minute, I can get a genuine Bosch oxygen sensor from the other guys for a fraction of this price. What gives?" Don't be fooled. GoWesty is not trying to gouge anyone on oxygen sensors.
The other guys are selling "universal" splice-in type units. They are genuine Bosch, yes, and in fact we used to use them in our own shop. The difference is the other guys don't have a repair shop, and don't actually install what they sell. We do, and we have found that the three-wire splice in Bosch oxygen sensors don't work on 1986-91 Vanagons, especially in wet conditions. Which is worse than if they never worked. If that were the case, you would know for sure the moment you put it in. But what happens is that you think you need an oxygen sensor because of certain symptoms, you replace it, it works, then it runs crappy again. Now you are "sure" it is not the oxygen sensor because, "Man, I just replaced it!" Time goes by and (you guessed it) no warranty on the one you bought. On top of that, you start replacing a bunch of other more expensive stuff trying to fix the problem.
Believe us, this more expensive, direct-fit, non-splice oxygen sensor is cheaper than what a less expensive, splice-in unit will cost you down the road. What's that saying again? Oh yeah, "There is never time to do it right, but always time to do it twice!" Be smart and do it once! These direct-fit oxygen sensors should eliminate any oxygen sensor related problems for 60,000 miles (please note, however, that they come equipped with our standard one-year warranty). This is not the area in which to try and save money!
Fits: 1986-91 Vanagon
Installer beware: Changing out any one part of your EFI system that is faulty with a new or rebuilt part may cause worse running because other settings may have changed over time to compensate for the faulty part you are replacing. Following the base-line settings procedure in the Bentley manual is required after installation. Also please read our return policy related to electric and electronic items.
The O2 sensor was very easy to install. It actually took more time trying to remove the old one than to install the new one. The plug-and-play/no-splicing was the most convenient.
Plug and play
Thanks
Make sure your current oxygen sensor isn't seized before ordering this. Or be prepared for a headache. If your 40 year old sensor isn't stuck in the cat then this is a very easy and worthwhile upgrade.
I couldn't tell you how old the original oxygen sensor is but my Westy has 370k miles on it. The old one has been in service for at least 2 or more decades! It could be original! I upgraded the muffler, cat, added a J-pipe, and this sensor, and engine performance is much smoother. The install was absolutely easy.
It’s the right fit. Cable is a little long, but I zip tied it in a bundle and it’s holding fine. No issues 2 years in.
