Why is this GoWesty Gear Oil Fill Plug better than the original one on my Vanagon transaxle?

Our GoWesty Gear Oil Fill Plug is designed for much easier access. The original internal-hex plug can be a real pain to remove and install. This replacement features an external-hex head, meaning you can easily use a standard 19mm wrench or socket to get it in and out, significantly simplifying your transaxle oil checks and changes. It’s a small upgrade that makes a big difference for DIY maintenance.

Will this transaxle fill plug fit my specific Bus or Vanagon year and drivetrain?

Yes, this plug is engineered to fit the fill ports on both 2WD and 4WD (Syncro) transaxles for 1968-1991 Type II Buses and Vanagons, whether you have a manual or automatic transmission. It’s specifically designed for the transaxle fill port, making it a versatile replacement part.

Can I use this plug to drain my transaxle fluid?

No, this GoWesty gear oil fill plug is designed specifically for the fill port. It should not be used on the drain ports of the transaxle. Additionally, it's not intended for the fill or drain ports on the Syncro front differential. Always use the correct plug for the specific port to ensure proper function and prevent leaks.

I've heard about adding a temperature sender to the transaxle. Can this fill plug help with that?

Absolutely! This premium fill plug includes a convenient 1/8" NPT threaded port. This means you can easily install an optional transmission oil temperature sender directly into the plug itself. It’s a great feature for monitoring your transaxle’s health, especially on modified vehicles or for those who like to keep a close eye on their drivetrain temperatures.
