Will this Vanagon headlight switch fit my vehicle? I have a 1988 model.

This headlight switch is designed as a direct replacement for 1980-1990 Vanagon models. While your 1988 Vanagon is within this range, it's important to note that there are early (8-pin) and late (10-pin) styles. This GoWesty switch is the early style with 8 pins, which is the only version currently available. It's a quality aftermarket part that resolves common issues like dimming or high beam problems.

My original headlight switch has 10 pins, but this one is listed as 8 pins. Will it still work as a replacement?

Yes, this replacement headlight switch features the 8-pin configuration that was standard on earlier Vanagon models (1980-1990). While later models used a 10-pin switch, that version is no longer manufactured by VW. This 8-pin switch is engineered to function correctly for the specified years and is a high-quality aftermarket solution that many customers have successfully used.

What are the main benefits of replacing my old Vanagon headlight switch with this one?

This quality aftermarket headlight switch is an excellent replacement for worn-out original units. Customers report that it fixes issues such as high beams not staying on, the dimmer function not working, or completely inoperable lights. It's designed for a direct fit and OEM-like appearance, helping to restore full functionality and improve your driving safety.

Are there any known fitment issues with this Vanagon headlight switch?

This switch is a direct fit for 1980-1990 Vanagon models and is designed to be a reliable replacement. While one customer noted brittle plastic tabs on their unit, the majority of reviews confirm a perfect fit and quality construction. It's a popular choice for Vanagon owners needing a functional and visually similar replacement for their headlight switch.

There are two different headlight switches for Vanagon:

Early: # 251-941-531M (1980-1990)
Late: # 251-941-531T (1989-1991)

From the front they look and function identically. However, they are slightly but significantly different on the back. The early style switch has only 8 pins, while the late style switch has 10 pins.

The 10 pin option is no longer available from VW and we are only offering the early style, 8 pin switch.
