Finally, a modern permanent magnet starter for your Bus or Vanagon with manual trans! This puppy is tiny compared to the original starter, even smaller than the gear reduction starters we once offered—but packs a wallop when it comes to power! This starter is rated at 1.0KW, but our tests confirm it cranks our 2.7 liter engine better than the 1.4KW gear reduction starter we used to offer, and it is about half the price! This is a brand-new, direct-fit starter. No core exchange, no modifications required and for a price anyone can afford!

Fits the following vehicles:
• 1976-79 Type II Bus with 2.0 liter and manual transaxle
• 1980-82 Aircooled Vanagon with manual transaxle
• 1983-91 Watercooled Vanagon with manual transaxleincluding Syncro*
• Engine conversions with manual transaxle

Will NOT fit diesel, or 1968-75 Type II Bus. If you have a '68-'75 Bus, you need the GVW-HTS-AT.

We highly recommend installing our Starter to Alternator Wiring Harness Upgrade Kit when replacing your starter. Delete your old and corroded wiring while simultaneously improving the performance of multiple systems. If you retain your factory original wiring, you may need to delete the jam nut and washer from the starter solenoid post to obtain more stud length. This is perfectly safe, and will not negatively affect the durability or longevity of the starter solenoid.
