Is this stainless steel coolant pipe compatible with my 1987 Vanagon GL?

Yes! This stainless steel coolant pipe is specifically designed to fit all 1986-1991 Vanagon models, including the GL, Carat, Wolfsburg, Westfalia, and Multivan trims. It's compatible with both 2WD and 4WD (Syncro) versions, and works with either manual or automatic transmissions. If your Vanagon is from those model years, you can install this part with confidence.

What makes the stainless steel coolant pipe a better choice than the original part?

Unlike the original factory part, which can rust and develop leaks over time, this replacement coolant pipe is made entirely from high-grade stainless steel. Vanagon owners love the upgrade because it resists corrosion in all climates and provides long-lasting durability. Many customers have commented on its excellent fit and finish, noting that it provides peace of mind on long journeys by eliminating a common weak point in the cooling system.

What should I expect for installation and what comes in the box?

This replacement stainless steel coolant pipe is a straightforward upgrade for your late-model Vanagon. The pipe is sold as a direct replacement for the stock unit that runs from the water pump to the thermostat housing. It includes the stainless steel pipe only, so be sure to reuse your original clamps or purchase new ones if needed. Most Vanagon owners with basic DIY skills can install the pipe in a few hours—just remember to drain your coolant before removal, and check for any perished hoses at the same time. Detailed instructions and tips are readily available on GoWesty's tech page and from fellow Vanagon enthusiasts.
