How do I know if I need the Early or Late style middle side window seals?

You can determine the correct seal by measuring your sliding door handle from the center of the keyhole to the end of the handle. If it measures 7.25", you need the Early-style (1980-1984). If it measures 5.75", you need the Late-style (1985-1991).

Can I install these window seals myself?

While these seals are designed for a perfect fit, professional installation is highly recommended to ensure the best results for your Vanagon.
