Oil drip under your Vanagon just in front of your muffler? Don’t blame the oil pump quite yet.

On waterboxer engines, leaks at the rear end are often mistaken for a bad oil pump—when, in reality, the real culprit is usually the sealing surface on the V-belt pulley just above it. Over time, that seal’s mating surface on your 30+-year-old pulley wears down, and simply replacing the seal often won’t fix the leak.

Here’s the smart fix: Our precision stainless steel sleeve. It presses right over your existing V-belt pulley flange surface, instantly restoring a perfect sealing surface—just like new. We install these on every engine we build, and before we did, about 1 in 10 engines would develop a pulley seal leak. Since using these sleeves? Zero leaks.

  • Stops leaks at the source – no more messy driveway spots.

  • Saves big on labor – avoids unnecessary oil pump replacement.

  • Built to last – durable stainless steel sealing surface for longevity.

Fits: All 1983-91 Vanagon Waterboxer - 2WD & Syncro*

*Note:
If you have a Syncro, your pulley might have a factory-installed sleeve and special seal that goes with it. If so, you will have to remove the existing sleeve and also replace the seal. Regardless, it’s a good idea to replace the seal and O-ring while you are in there anyway. Check out our related items, which include these parts as well as our nifty flywheel locking tool.
