My Vanagon's heater control lights are out. Is this bulb and socket kit exactly what I need to fix them, especially for the Dash Vent controls?

Yes, this is the correct bulb and socket assembly designed specifically for the dash vent controls and heater switch illumination on all Vanagon models from 1980 to 1991. If your heater control lights are out, this assembly is likely the solution you need to restore visibility.

How many of these bulb and socket units do I need for my Vanagon? Do I need one for the front and another for the back?

You will need two of these integrated bulb and socket units per Vanagon. One is for the front dash vent controls and heater switch, and a second one is required for the rear heater switch. Purchasing two ensures you can replace both locations.

Can I just replace the bulb in my old heater switch socket? Or does the whole unit need to be replaced, including my Dash Vent controls?

No, you cannot replace just the bulb. This unit is designed as a single, integrated assembly where the bulb and its holder are permanently connected. You must replace the entire bulb and socket assembly for your heater switch and Dash Vent controls.

Will this bulb and socket fit my 1985 Vanagon Westfalia with an automatic transmission? Are there different versions?

Absolutely. This quality aftermarket bulb and socket assembly is designed to fit all Vanagon models from 1980 to 1991, including 2WD and 4WD variants, and regardless of transmission type (automatic or manual) or specific trim like the Westfalia Camper. It's a universal fit for the illumination component.
